THE unbind BOND

By Namrota Ghosh Chowdhury

Sourav was never such happy before. It was the graduation party of St. Joseph’s College. Everyone was psyching themselves up for the evening. Party was going to be held in the college hall room sharp at 7:00pm. Students were almost ready to’ bang-on’. It was not at all a usual day for Sourav. When he first came as a fresher in the college, he was quite an introvert person. He never talked much. Kept things to himself, as if he was suffering some kind of agony inside. He preferred to conceal it rather than to disclose. Few people who tried to mix with him found him boring and dumb. As you know in their language “not so cool”.

Finally the evening came, everyone was excited and allured except our genius boy Sourav. He managed to keep himself aloof from others. He was sitting at a corner thinking about something very deeply as if he was in another world that belonged to himself. Suddenly Mohit came to him and asked “Hey Champ! Why are you so dull? Is everything ok?” Lost in his own thoughts, he didn’t bother.  “I think I am disturbing you right?”  “Ya, I mean no” Sourav said in a confusing tone. “Let’s have a drink, you’ll feel better.” Sourav hesitated at first but then agreed to him and he had to as he found a mystic feeling in his charm. Mohit’s voice seemed to him like lullaby. Sourav went with him to the drink’s counter near and Mohit took two glasses of soft drinks. “The music is quite loud, don’t you feel that?” “Yes, maybe” replied Sourav in a husky voice. “Is everything ok with you?”. “So finally, we can call ourselves graduate now. Aren’t you excited”? “Excitement for what? About future?” Said Sourav. Mohit replied in affirmative. “I have no future, I am born unfortunate, and simply living is a duty for me. I am lying to myself every moment in my life but still I am not satisfied. I am just like an unheard voice which has no sound of its own and will go forth very soon. My existence has no value because I am not true to myself”. Mohit was surprised because he thought he was the only victim of destiny but someone is here too with the same fortune.

Mohit’s conversation took an unexpected turn as if his outward appearance was just glittering gold but inwardly he was made of the same hollow stuff as Sourav. “Life is an utter surprise itself. Sometime what we see is just an illusion” exclaimed Mohit. He opened up with his life in front of Sourav, his eyes were glittering as stars, his voice was just like a winter’s tale. He narrated the truth of his life. He is a man who liked person of same gender, basically a gay. Life was never a bed of roses for him, on every step he got humiliation and suffered immensely. His existence thought to be a burden to his family. He was considered to be normal as others and was bound to follow the social norms. He made his identity his consort and moved on in his life. When he said all this Sourav couldn’t control his tears. He said “I thought I am the only worst perjurer on this earth and seen my own sorrows, never thought seeing you that sufferings can also be like this what you faced. It’s a Deja-vu because my case is similar to yours and I am sure God has made us meet for a purpose after 22 years” “I am happy to get you as my friend. When I saw you for the first time I felt a kind of attachment with you but never could gather courage to say you. I really like you, I got you late but I am happy now. Mohit was really stuck into the moment and confessed that he also has a liking for Sourav from the beginning. “Today is the last day of our college but it feels like the happiness that I searched for got its true meaning in this night in your eyes.” Said Mohit. They both were frozen and stuck into each other like newly couple dipped in love, they were in a moment of ecstasy. They couldn’t move and still for minutes sitting on the table near the drink’s counter in the crowd but still away from it. Everything ceased for them the music, people, Dj, lights, everything seemed so serene so ecstatic as if they were in a world of their own. As if till now they were seeking country pleasures but never tasted the ethereal food of joy.  Sourav with determination said “I know now what to do. My dilemma came to an end. I am going to confess everything tonight to my parents. You taught me the real lesson. I could have never lived peacefully like this. After all it’s my life, I am adult enough to take my own decision. After all it’s not a crime to be attracted to a person of same gender, what they see is ‘Society’. I give a damn to it now. I no more will think about it. I’ll not let them interrupt into my life. I’ll not let them ‘so-called society’ decide my fate. It’s all because of you. You enlightened me.” “I am happy I could be a help to you. Sometimes it’s not so easy to choose the correct road. Sometime walking on an untrodden road may prove wonders. I wish for your good life ahead. Wish to meet you again” said Mohit. “Surely we will” said Sourav.

Meanwhile a person announced that the party is going to be over, it’s already 11 pm. All were exhausted except these two who got new lease of life. “Can I drop you home?” Said Mohit. Sourav was on the ninth cloud and was now pretty sure about his future. Others were surprised to see him smiling like never before. The bond they share was so special. While Mohit was driving Sourav home, he asked to Sourav about his day and he hugged him and said it was pretty delightful for me. He further interrogated Mohit about his plans, Mohit showed a pale face gathered courage and said, “I know you like me, I too but unfortunately my parents have chosen a girl for me. Our engagement is fixed next week and I am helpless about it. I love my parents.” They reached their destination, Sourav got out of the car and wished him for his good life ahead and said nothing just there was a smile on his lips somewhat painful. His last lines were “some fine day we will meet. This is not our time.”
