Fortress by Laura Fitzgerald

Fortress

I shall build myself a fine fortress,

Its length and breadth a strong enfilade,

And as heaven and earth bear witness,

None shall break through my sound barricade.

I shall bask in peaceful solitude,

Safe within non-judgmental walls,

Inner strength and love in plenitude,

Answer only the moon as night calls.

I shall reign; coronated empress,

No longer a vassal to heartbreak,

Preeminent queen, spirit dauntless,

A woman not defined by mistakes.

I shall lay down futile munition,

For this weary heart holds no more fight,

A buried bastille of attrition,

And revel in true tranquil delight.

I shall fortify my soul and stay,

Observing life as it comes and goes,

Far away from the petulant fray,

And the odious quips of past foes.
